Toronto school board opens Beijing office in attempt to lure more foreign students
Toronto’s cash-strapped public school board has been test-driving a marketing office in Beijing since late April in a bid to boost its numbers of fee-paying foreign students.
Recruitment of mainland Chinese students to attend Toronto District School Board schools has gone on for years, usually by Chinese recruiters, working on contract to the board, who are located across the country, said board chair Chris Bolton. The “TDSB Information and Promotion Office,” will help co-ordinate prospective students’ enrolment and visa applications, and provide further information to interested families in a bid to “gain a greater market share” of Chinese students and keep up “a competitive edge” with other countries and school boards that have delved into the coveted foreign student market, according to a board description.
“The overall goal was to establish a presence, a marketing base for the TDSB, to be a consistent source of information about the kinds of programs available,” Mr. Bolton told National Post last week. “My understanding is that [the office] has been relatively busy.”
The office venture, officially begun in March, is being done in tandem with York University, which is using the same local Chinese company, CFe Societies, to operate an office of its own next-door to the TDSB’s. The cost of the six-month pilot for the TDSB is $17,500.
