今年7月3日，21岁的前驻伊美军士兵史蒂文·格林被美国北卡罗来纳州检察机关以强奸和谋杀罪名起诉。7月9日，美国军方又宣布另外4名涉及此案的士兵也遭到指控。今年3月，格林和其他几名驻伊美军士兵闯入巴格达以南的马哈茂迪耶一户居民家中，强奸了年仅14岁的少女阿尔比，然后开枪将她和她的三位家人打死。为了掩盖罪行，格林还焚烧了阿尔比的尸体。
　　
　　格林的原定受审日期为8月8日。但由于涉案的其他几名士兵于8月6日在伊拉克的美军基地内出席听证会，两次开庭所需要的证人和证据基本上相同，因此肯塔基州法官7月20日决定，将格林的受审日期推迟3个月。

A U.S. Army private yesterday described the ever- present fear of death gripping his unit, members of which stand accused of raping and murdering a 14-year-old girl and killing her family in Iraq's infamous "Triangle of Death."

"You're just walking a death walk," Pfc. Justin Cross told a hear ing to determine whether five fel low soldiers must stand trial in the March 12 attack near Mahmoudiya.

But prosecutors argued that the threats of war, arduous missions and frequent loss of life were no excuse for rape and murder.

"Murder, not war. Rape, not war. That's what we're here talking about today," prosecutor Capt. Alex Pickands said in his closing ar gument before the three-day hear ing concluded. "Cold food didn't kill that family. Personnel assignments didn't rape and murder that 14-year-old little girl."

Pickands said the suspects "gathered together over cards and booze and came up with a plan to rape and murder that little girl."

Spc. James P. Barker, Sgt. Paul E. Cortez, Pfc. Jesse V. Spielman and Pfc. Bryan L. Howard are accused of raping and murdering the girl and killing her parents and 5-year-old sister. Another soldier, Sgt. Anthony W. Yribe, is accused of failing to report the attack but is not alleged to have participated.

"It drives you nuts. You feel like every step you might get blown up," Cross told the hearing. "You just hit a point where you're like, 'If I die today, I die.'"

Cross said the unit was "full of despair," and he feared dying at his post before he could go home.
