The White House declined to criticize Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian's decision to scrap an advisory council on unifying the island with China, which has triggered warnings from Beijing.
But spokesman Scott McClellan reiterated Washington's longstanding position that there is "one China" and warned "there should be no unilateral change in the status quo by either side."
"The United States continues to also stress the need for Beijing to open a meaningful dialogue with the duly elected leadership in Taiwan that leads to a peaceful resolution of their differences," the spokesman said.
Chen's decision to shut down the National Unification Council (NUC) and to scrap symbolic guidelines on possible reunification with mainland China came despite pressure against the move from Taiwan's close ally Washington.
But the White House steered clear of criticism, focusing instead on restatements of policy and praise for Chen's reaffirmations of a desire for peace and stability and a pledge not to take unilateral action.
"He reaffirmed commitments made during the 2000 and 2004 inaugural addresses, and the United States attaches great importance to those commitments," said McClellan.
"Our one-China policy remains based on the three communiques, the Taiwan Relations Act and our belief that there should be no unilateral change in the status quo by either side," said the spokesman.
The decision to abolish the council and the guidelines will take effect on Tuesday.
"The National Unification Council will cease functioning and the budget no longer be appropriated," said the pro-independence Chen, an outspoken critic of Beijing's claim of sovereignty over the island.
"The National Unification Guidelines will also cease to apply," Chen told reporters after a meeting of Taiwan's top security agency, the National Security Council.
